Mastering Momentum: The Art of Constant Progress

Mastering Momentum: The Art of Constant Progress
“The measure of progress of civilization is the progress of the people” - George Bancroft

Do you ever have large ambitions that don’t seem to materialise?

This was me, until I focused on the art of constant progress. This is an effective method that anyone can use to achieve their goals.

Having set writing as an area of exploration in 2024, I was regularly missing writing targets, whilst struggling with consistency. Then, during the last quarter of 2024 and into 2025, my writing consistency exploded, thanks to a simple adjustment.

Today we are going to look at the power of small, consistent actions in achieving long-term goals. If you are looking to make powerful change, then these insights will be of benefit to you too.

What is Constant Progress?

The definition of progress is to move forward, developing to a higher, better, or more advanced stage.

The art of constant progress is about so much more. This is about small steps, backed by consistency and determination to reach realistic goals.

So how can we apply this concept to our daily lives?

Practical Tips to Find Constant Progress

  1. Know Your Destination: Progress begins with setting clear, achievable goals. The best goals can be established with the SMART system, which you can read more about here.
  2. Consistent Steps: Build regular habits, as opposed to varied bursts of enthusiasm. Progress is achieved by finding the route forward that enables constant development.
  3. Collective Progress: Look to develop relationships with others looking to progress with similar skills. Use this connection to support, review and push yourself, as well as those around you. Consider joining classes, forums or speak to your friends about working with you.
  4. Seek Mentors: Find someone that can provide guidance as you progress towards your goal. Someone who has taken a similar journey can save you time and pain, by providing the tools to find the right road map forward.

How Do We Judge Progress?

The best way to judge progress is through capturing the data that reflects the movement from where we began against our end goal. There are several ways that we can set ourselves up to track progress:

  1. Log Your Growth: Make your goals achievable every day, rather than setting lofty ambitions where you risk falling short and losing motivation. When it came to my personal objective of writing, this was centred around a realistic word count per day.
  2. Find Your Tools: Place your daily target somewhere you can easily access and update every day. Great places can be:
    1. A physical notebook.
    2. Physical or digital calendars
    3. Apps like Notes or Notion
  3. Personal Focus: There will always be a temptation to compare yourself to others, but this is to be avoided. The most important part of constant progress is that you improve from where you were yesterday.

Remember that small wins build motivation, so aim to build a tracking system that reinforces this principle.

Move Towards Constant Progress

Progress is a powerful force that can enhance your journey towards self-improvement. Supported by consistency, this can become the momentum you require to become an unstoppable force.
